I was lucky enough to be successful in gaining a scholarship to go to Nottingham’s campus in China to take part in a 2-week course during the summer holidays, meeting loads of new Notts students in the process.
The scholarship paid for our flights and for the tuition and we stayed in the halls on campus. The course was so interesting – we had daily Mandarin lessons, learnt about Chinese history, politics and culture, had tai chi and lessons in traditional art. We were also taken to Shanghai for three days, which is about a five hour coach ride from the campus and an incredible modern city.
We were buddied up with students that study there full time so hung out with them and learnt what life was like for our University of Nottingham Chinese counterparts! It was such an amazing experience to travel to and experience a country I wouldn’t otherwise have been able to go to. My friend and I was also able to spend a week in Beijing beforehand, taking in the Forbidden City and of course, The Great Wall of China!
I would really recommend taking advantage of the university’s international links and campuses if you are able – if nothing else, it is sure to look good on your CV afterwards!
