For when home is a bit uncomfy

By Katya Torres

Well what a month. All schedule, sense of target and comfort out the window. We can’t allow ourselves to fall victim to monotonous school, work and university schedules anymore, suddenly and almost over night you have to take control for yourself. You can’t surrender your energy to a deadline or sports practice. You can’t surrender your whereabouts to your place of education. Suddenly you’re forced to figure out where “home” is for you. Where you are happy isn’t necessarily synonymous with where you are needed, or where you should be by tradition.

Last week I found myself realising for the first time in my life that I wasn’t really sure where I was supposed to exist. A lot of my friends were on the train home the morning after lockdown was announced and I couldn’t figure out where I was supposed to be, I couldn’t figure out what was “home” to me. I knew where I would be happier and healthier, but it wasn’t where I felt obliged to be. So for all you guys reading this who perhaps feel trapped in your home, triggered in your home, uncomfortable or unsafe, to my regret I can’t fix your situation, so instead, here is a little bit about my favourite song lyrics, to inspire you to listen to them or just to take your mind off your situation.

I think my favourite lyricists are Paul Simon and Dire Straits. My favourite Dire straits lyric is “you and me babe how bout it?” There’s something comfortingly juvenile about it, juxtaposed by the intricacy of the electric guitar. It’s so simple, almost too simple, like you could imagine it in a conversation. In this same song is the. Lyric “there’s a place for us, you know the movie song”. This refers to the song “somewhere” from West Side Story. This reference is so touching for me because I was introduced to West Side Story by my best friend; my dad. He bought me the DVD as a present when he was working away. I’m holding onto that same feeling of comfort it brought in times like this. Stay safe loves!
