Starting university can be daunting, but here are 5 quick actions you can take thissummer to give yourself a head start!
.Join Facebook groups. If you don’t already have an account this is a good time to start one, you can join group chats for your degree subject and accommodation. You might even be able to find your first-year flatmates and start to get to know them.
.Plan your Freshers Week. Towards the end of the summer societies will release timetables on social media of free taster sessions, and you can find details of nights out and Freshers events on Facebook and on the Student Guild website.Checking in advance when events are on means you won’t miss out!
.If you’re able to access lecture notes or reading lists, take a glance through those over summer. It doesn’t hurt to be prepared, and I found reading ahead while I had the time took pressure off during term and meant I had more free time to spend with friends.
.Set up a student bank account and student rail card. This isn’t compulsory, but if you decide to start a student account or plan to take frequent train journeys home you don’t want to be worrying about it at the start of term-sort it out over summer!
.Watch YouTube videos made by current students. There’s a video out there for pretty much every aspect of university life you can imagine-what to pack, accommodation tours, vlogs showing daily life on campus, etc. Any question you have, there’s probably a video that can answer it. Shameless plug: I have aYouTube channel sharing student life at Exeter, feel free to watch!
