1. It's the best years of your life
Whether you are starting your university journey this year, or your journey has come to an end, I'm sure you have heard the cliché - university will be the best years of your life. When I first heard this, I thought "yeah whatever, I'm going to have piles of coursework, tight deadlines, and strict lecturers." However, once you actually experience it, you'll see that it's actually right. Yes, you get tight deadlines and piles of coursework and exams, but at the same time, you grow as a person, become independent, and meet amazing people.
2. Not everything works out the way you want it to
I think we have all learned this year that some things in life just don't go to plan. I never thought my last months at university would be done from my spare room on a makeshift desk! It was a challenge, but once I got into the swing of things and got into a routine - things weren't so bad. You have to make light of these situations and try and see the positives in everything.
3. Mental breakdowns don't last forever and it's okay to ask for help
You certainly have your fair share of mental breakdowns at university - I'm sure everyone reading this knows the feeling. Everyone struggles and university helped me realise that it’s okay to ask for help. If you don’t ask for help, the situation can just grow and get worse - at the end of the day, teachers and support staff are there to help you.
4. To be yourself
University taught me that it's okay to be yourself. If you don't fit the student stereotype - it's okay! I certainly didn't fit into the 'student' category very well. When I first started, I was worried I wouldn't fit in because I commuted, and I wasn't a party animal. However, you meet likeminded people, and they often turn into your friends for life.
5. Time goes way too quickly
I blinked and it was final year. I can still remember the moment I walked into my first class, with friends I met through one of the university Facebook groups. Time goes so quickly, so just cherish every minute, make unforgettable memories, and take every opportunity - before you enter the real world!
