I'm Abdullah, an architecture student at Clare College Cambridge. Why I chose this creative degree is because it lets me burst into a traditional university with bags of energy. I’ve literally grown up with the skyscrapers of London towering above me. I’ve always been curious about the world around me and never go out without a sketchbook- you never know when in your day-to-day life you’ll come across a beautiful moment you simply have to capture. Soon, I came to realise I had a story going, all the places where my life took me. I wanted to turn my passion into my degree- and stumbled upon architecture.
Why I chose Cambridge is, while it is creative and out-of-the-box, there is a huge focus on History & Theory- I did History of Art for an A-level and wanted to continue with this. Paired with English and Art, my A-level subjects were far from traditional architecture subjects – Maths and Physics. I believe having a varied skillset creates a dynamic learning environment. The studio we all work in is a melting pot of ideas.
Cambridge has allowed me to flourish into who I really am. Yes, this is a cliché phrase, overused by so many, but it’s because it's true! I came out as gay and was widely celebrated and loved and received overwhelming support- I never imagined I could live the way I do a couple of years ago, coming from a religious background. I truly live to my fullest when I’m at cam- it’s so rich, there’s always something on or someone to see, all set in the beautifully crafted architecture that I cannot stop looking at and drawing. It’s become a home created and made up by the architecture of love, friendships, tradition and humanity.
