What's the Point?

I can’t be the only Year 13 in the country scratching my head and wondering what on earth just happened.


Two weeks ago, I was settling in to an evening study session at my college library when someone tapped me on the shoulder.


“Have you heard?” I shook my head no.


“They just cancelled exams.”


Around me, other people were starting to notice, looking up from their books in disbelief. I could hear cheering from one of the computer rooms down the corridor.


Loads of people just got up and left. “What’s the point?”


I thought they were making a mistake. All we knew then was that we weren’t having exams in May and June - I was convinced they would be postponed, and I was going to be glad of the extra revision time if I kept working until it was announced.


I’m starting to think they might have been right.


My teachers are setting work online with descriptions like “I know you won’t have much motivation at the moment” and “obviously there’s a question about whether you should be revising at all”. Technically, if my calculated grade is below the offer for my firm choice uni, I guess I’m going to have to take the exams in Autumn. But that definitely doesn’t feel real.


I’m making sure I do the work I’m set, but honestly I’m not sure why. Because I want my teachers to be impressed when they calculate my grades? Because the Year 7 I used to be is scared of what’s going to happen if I don’t do my homework? Because I’ve got nothing better to do?


I’m absolutely not revising.


Maybe I should be. But, given that I’m absolutely not going to take the exams if I can help it, what would be the point?
